FAQ
What type of bearers and joists do i need
You have a choice between steel, hardwood or pine and they all have their advantages and applications.
Pines main advantage is cost. Pine is often used on small areas like back porches and stairways landings. It is the budget solution and is not suitable spanning long distances and not ideal for multi-level verandah or deck to provide weight bearing support.
Hardwood is highly durable and attractive material. It offers high weight bearing support and is suitable for most decks. Hardwoods give the most visually appealing result and add a timeless feel to any back deck.
Steel is by far the most durable option and is capable of spanning long distances. It’s ideal for decks that will have heavy loads or multi-story verandahs.
What height can my deck be before i need handrails
Handrails are not required where a deck less than one metre (1m) above ground, though depending on the height it may still be recommended. If your deck is more then four meters (1m) your balustrades and rails will need to meet other standards as set out by building codes. Part of gaining approval for your deck will involve assessment of the need for handrails and will be discussed with you prior to any construction.
How long will the process take
A deck measuring 3 x 6 meters without a patio can take approximately 1-2 weeks from start to finish. The time required to build a deck can vary depending on the need to also install a patio over your deck, stairs and the overall size of your deck. We like to give you a timeframe base on your specific job prior to any construction.
